Brief History
This lady aged 28
years realised she had acquired the virus five years ago in 1992 and for
a period of two years she suffered from serious opportunistic infections
which included among others: recurrent malaria, causing serious fevers
and anaemia. She got diarrhoea, loss of appetite, and loss of weight,
severe fungus infections in the mouth and also mycotic infections of the
skin. She was also coughing for a period of 6 months by the time she came
to the M-dina clinic.
She was examined and found to have full blown AIDS. She was HIV positive
by ELISA and confirmed by Western Blots. She had a white blood count of
3,200 per cubic mm, her CD4 count was 250 and CD8 was 380 per cubic mm.
The x-ray of the chest showed tuberculosis involving both lungs. The skin
was peeling off because of advanced mycotic infections.
Treatment
She was put on M-dina
A (2x3), M-dina B (1x3) & M-dina J (1x3). She was also given
anti-tuberculosis treatment, which consisted of Refampicin and INH, Ethambitol
and Pyrazinamide. The Candidiasis was treated with Miconazol.
The response to treatment was rapid. The patient started to improve and
the skin infection was treated with specific anti-fungal lotions including
Miconazol. The tuberculosis cleared within four months and the patient
had very much improved generally by the end of six months. She has continued
on M-dina treatment for the last two years and a half, with no recurrence
of the original opportunistic infections including tuberculosis.
She has returned to her normal occupation although she's reviewed every
three months and given more maintenance M-dina pills of one third
of the original dose.
